May blocks Leicester marches

Monday, 4 October 2010 12:00 AM  Police ready to block Leicester march By politics.co.uk staff Home secretary Theresa May has banned marches in Leicester on the day that the English Defence League had planned to protest. The right-wing group had planned to march around the city on October 9th and was facing a counter-protest by Unite Against Fascism. That has now been cast into doubt after Ms May authorised an order imposing a blanket ban on marches in the city this Saturday. By This is Leicestershire  |  Posted: October 04, 2010 About 100 people attended a meeting yesterday about the English Defence League protest set to take place in the city centre at the weekend. The Indian Workers’ Association’s (IWA) Leicestershire branch organised the meeting at the Guru Tegh Bahadur Gurdwara, in Leicester. The EDL – which says it campaigns against Islamic extremism – is planning a protest in Humberstone Gate on Saturday.
