Members of a campaign group have called for communities to work together in the wake of the disturbances in Leicester earlier this month.

The Indian Workers Association Leicestershire Branch is looking to set up the Safer, Stronger Communities Project to prevent similar events happening again.

The idea was announced at a public meeting attended by about 70 people at the Guru Dashmesh Gurdwara in Gipsy Lane, Leicester, on Saturday.

Speaking about the riots that erupted across the country, Sital Singh Gill, general secretary of the Leicestershire branch of the association, said: “The purpose of the meeting is to unite all of our community to make a powerful voice against these riots and build a good partnership with the schools, police, local authority, health service providers and other agencies.

“We strongly believe that we need to unite all of the community to work together with the police, city council, and other agencies. We are going to launch a new organisation in our city that represents all sections of our society for the betterment for local people and communities.”

Evington ward councillor Baljit Singh said it was “marvellous” to see so many people at the meeting.

“That is an indication that we as a community feel very strongly about what has happened recently in the city of Leicester,” Coun Singh said.

“It has given us the impetus to bring together a group that will hopefully make a difference.”
